Artist Statement
나는 사진에 내포된 우연성이 음악처럼 어떤 구조 안에서 어떻게 작동하는지를 탐구해보고 싶었다. 이번 예술사진프로젝트에서 내가 세운 규칙은 단순하다. “정확히 4박마다 셔터를 누른다.” 일정한 박자 안에서만 움직이되, 그 안에서 일어나는 모든 것(사람, 소리, 빛)은 통제하지 않는다. 카메라는 4박이 지날 때마다 촬영을 진행하고, 그 순간의 주변 소음이 프로그램을 통해 하나의 음으로 변환된다. 사람들의 말소리, 자동차 소리, 바람, 발자국 같은 것들이 실시간으로 분석되어 음높이로 치환되고, 그 음은 해당 사진에 종속된다. 결과적으로 사진 한 장당 하나의 음이 대응되고, 촬영이 끝나면 그것은 연속된 사진 시퀀스이자 하나의 악보가 된다. 여기서 우연성은 두 층위에서 발생한다. 하나는, 내가 셔터를 누르는 순간 프레임 안에 무엇이 들어올지 예측할 수 없다는 점. 다른 하나는, 박자 구조 안에서도 주변 소리의 변화가 매번 달라져 각 사진에 대응되는 음이 일정하지 않다는 점이다. 이 프로젝트는 우연이 하나의 시스템 안에서 어떤 구조를 만들어내는지를 확인하기 위한 실험이다. 동일한 규칙이 매번 다른 결과를 생성하는 과정을 통해 나는 우연의 작동을 기록하고자 했다.
I wanted to examine not the appreciation of chance, but how the chance inherent in photography operates within a musical structure. For this project, I set one rule: press the shutter every four beats. I follow the rhythm, while everything happening inside it— people, sound, and light—remains uncontrolled. Each four-beat moment triggers both a photograph and the conversion of its surrounding sound into a single note. Voices, cars, wind, footsteps become pitch data, and every photo holds one corresponding tone. The sequence eventually forms a line of images that is also a musical score. Chance emerges on two levels: the unpredictability of what enters the frame, and the constant variation of ambient sound that assigns a different note each time. Through this system, I aimed to observe how fixed rules generate endlessly different outcomes—the structure of chance itself.
